Good hearted donors have built two sets of classrooms at schools in Darkha, Nepal.  However, providing teaching space is just one part of the puzzle.  Teachers must also be hired to educate the students that will inhabit the classroom.

In Nepal, teachers are government employees.  However, the government is not responsive in a timely manner when a village has an increase in population and more children will be attending school.  Generally, the approach is for the village to build extra classrooms, hire their own teachers, and then petition the government to pay for the teachers.  The process can take years.

In September 2014, we visited a 4 room classroom building funded by a school teacher from Virginia, which opened the previous March.  During our visit, the principal told us that the village was struggling to pay the 4 additional teachers.  Our volunteer staying in the village wasn’t certain if the women he saw were even being paid, or were just volunteering their time at the school.

We are looking into the possibility of paying for one or two teacher salaries at this school for a limited period of time.  We have inquired into the yearly salary, and are waiting for a response from the village!  More to come on this topic.

Below is a link to a website of an organization that built classrooms in another location in Darkha.  HANDS in Nepal was started by an impressive young man while he was still in college.
