Women’s Health Camp – Feb. 2020

Imagine being carried on someone's back, in a basket, when you are too ill to reach a health provider.  This is the reality for residents of Darkha Nepal, where the closest medical practitioner is a 2-3 hour walk away over rugged terrain.  During the rainy season (approximately June-September) the roads are washed out from monsoon rains.  Even when the roads are passable,  there are no doctors in this region, only Health Assistants (with less training than a U.S. Physician's Assistant). Colorado Nepal Alliance is hosting a women's health camp in late February 2020, to allow the women who live in this area to see a doctor, many for the first ...

Students Are Back Indoors

The classrooms at Chandra Devi primary school in Darkha Ward 6 have been completed, and the students have moved in! They are no longer studying under a roof with no walls. This school serves preschoolers through Grade 3.  Many of the students are members of the lowest caste.  The parents and community members pitched in as volunteers and dismantled the old school destroyed in the April 2015 earthquake.  They then worked as paid workers to construct two two-room buildings.  Long narrow buildings can twist during an earthquake, which is why the four rooms were broken into two separate buildings. Many women were able to participate in the ...

The building houses three of the smaller classes.  New tables and benches were supplied, as well as white boards for the teachers.
