Rasuwa & Nuwakot Devastated by Flooding

On Wednesday August 26, 2026, a severe flood began on the Bhote Khosi River in Tibet and quickly roared downstream, devastating many communities in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot Districts of Nepal. The video above is from Trishuli Bazar, a market town that Colorado Nepal Alliance members have traveled through many times. Villages, their residents, and animals were swept away.  The death toll is unknown, with only 400 bodies located so far.  It is feared the number will reach the thousands.  Many foreign tourists are also missing.

Colorado Nepal Alliance has been in some of these villages, such as Syaphrubesi in Rasuwa.  This was the starting point of our Shoes for Sherpas Langtang shoe and boot distribution in 2014. Unfortunately, the village of Syaphrubesi is mostly destroyed.

How can I help?  At the moment, we are collecting donations that we will forward to the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), which is coordinating relief efforts.  100% of all donations (excluding credit card processing fees, which we don’t receive) will be forwarded. It is hoped that the resulting donation will be larger than donations made through the American Red Cross, which are then transferred to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and are finally funneled to NRCS.  An anonymous CNA donor will cover the cost of the wire transfer fees.

In the future, CNA will discuss how to best help the flood-affected communities.  Our experience working in rebuilding schools after the 2015 earthquake taught us that there are many potential donors in rebuilding efforts, and it is important to locate projects that are not likely to attract large international donors.
