The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal on Saturday has literally hit too close to home.

The classroom we’ve been building, the children for whom we bought school uniforms, the region in which we’ve been doing a medical capacity survey, and have distributed nearly 1,000 pairs of shoes and boots: It’s only 18 miles from the quake epicenter.

We have not been in direct contact with anyone living in Darkha. [Update 4/30: We made contact with our Nepal Projects Coordinator who was in Darkha when the quake hit.]  We’ve received information that most buildings have collapsed, there are many fatalities, and there has been no meaningful response from the Nepali government to the devastation in rural Nepal.

We are trying to reach out to organizations that may have the capability to provide disaster assistance, but rural areas with little political clout may not receive aid in a timely manner, if at all.

Please, pray for our staff, pray for their families, pray for all of the people in Nepal affected by this quake.

As a very small nonprofit, we do not have the ability to provide direct disaster assistance–although I have enquired about renting a helicopter, but expect all have been pressed into service by the large aid organizations.  But this does not mean we are powerless!

Folks, we have the ability to move mountains, one rock at a time!

SAMSUNG CSC

We have set up the Darkha Disaster Assistance Fund.  This fund will help those that have survived start the rebuilding process. We have many ties to this community, and will work with either the Darkha Village Development Committee or elders of the villages within the VDC to select families with the greatest need.

So, please join me in moving a mountain, one rock at a time!  Make a tax deductible donation to the Darkha Nepal Disaster Relief Fund.
