Sarah’s Blog: More Motivation

Yesterday, Nepal was shaken by ANOTHER EARTHQUAKE - this one magnitude 7.3. Though not nearly as damaging as the initial quake, the death toll from this one is rising. Due to the first earthquake, most buildings in Nepal have been severely damaged, and are highly prone to collapse in the aftershocks. People are rightfully afraid to stay in their homes, yet tents, tarps, and other temporary shelters are impossibly hard to come by in Nepal right now. Please help CNA finance the construction and shipment of large tents from India, which will serve as temporary living spaces for the people of Dharka through the aftershocks and monsoon season, until ...

Shelters Delivered to Darkha

The Colorado Nepal Alliance has been hard at work providing emergency supplies to the the villagers in Darkha, Nepal, and we can report that a preliminary shipment of emergency shelters has reached Dhading. The weather in the Dhading District of Nepal has been cold and wet, with temperatures dropping well below fifty degrees Fahrenheit at night. Most of the village's homes were destroyed by the quake. Fearing aftershocks and structural instability, people are understandably wary of sleeping near collapse-prone structures that still stand. They need protection from the elements, and they don't have time to wait for an already overtaxed ...

Your Donations at Work: Food Delivered to Darkha

Colorado Nepal Alliance Executive Director Anne Hines passes along this update: I just spoke with Gopal Tamang, our projects coordinator in Nepal. He is exhausted. Gopal purchased rice and rented a truck, traveling as far as he could by road to Lapang.  People from Darkha walked down 3.5 hours and are carrying rice back up. Gopal reports the people in Darkha have been very hungry and are rationing food by eating thin rice porridge. We'll have more updates soon. In the meantime, learn how you can help.

Source: PAUWATHOK, Nepal: ‘We need help’: Aid scarce in quake-hit Nepal villages | World | The News Tribune Great article on the paucity of aid in villages-- even those nearer to Kathmandu and relief workers. This line caught my eye because it relates to the discussions we've been having around here: "That need remains great. Nepal Information Minister Minendra Rijal said the government has supplied only 29,000 tents to 400,000 displaced people." (The News Tribune) We're starting to move tents, tarps, and other targeted supplies to Darka for this very reason. Learn how we're getting supplies to Darkha-- and how you can help!

Getting Supplies to Darkha, Nepal

HOW WE’RE GETTING SUPPLIES TO DARKHA, NEPAL, AND HOW YOU CAN HELP   Darkha is only 12.5 miles from the quake epicenter. Every building suffered significant damage, and many collapsed entirely. Families are sheltering in fields with minimal protection from the weather. The monsoon rains will arrive in early June. Colorado Nepal Alliance's in-country coordinator, Gopal Tamang, arrived safely in Kathmandu on Thursday. "The people are crying everywhere," reports Gopal. Sixty-eight deaths have been confirmed, although bodies are still being recovered. Many of the injured were carried by hand to Dhading Besi, a city that takes six to eight ...

Area non-profits collaborate to help victims of Nepal earthquake « The Denver Post

From the Denver Post: Within two hours on Wednesday, volunteers agreed on the start of a plan to help victims of last weekend's devastating earthquake in Nepal. But these were not just any volunteers. They represented local non-profits like the Colorado Nepal Alliance, Helping Hands Health Education and several others. There were also people who had lived or hiked in Nepal, or had family currently living in tents when their homes collapsed. The group's goal? Figure out the needs, collaborate on resources and help victims as efficiently and immediately as possible. Read the full article on the Denver Post ... Source: Chuang, Tamara. ...
