School Rebuilding Partnership in Kuri, Nepal

The Colorado Nepal Alliance (CNA) has established a rebuilding partnership with the Lower Secondary School in Kuri, Darkha VDC. The school teaches grades 1-8, as well as a combined pre-K and kindergarten “playgroup.” This is the second time we have built a school with the people of Kuri, and we're thrilled to work with them again! Our first building project in Kuri was partially completed during the winter of 2014/2015 and was waiting for concrete to be poured in the spring. That classroom was badly damaged in the April 2015 earthquake, along with nine others. ...

The builders were all from the highly affected districts of Dhading and Nuwakot. Classroom training The first workshop was a seminar taught by Owen Geiger, the world’s foremost builder of earthbag buildings. CNA has long had an interest in this building technology, since it uses local soil and can be more cost effective than other building techniques. It's also proven to be an extremely safe ...

CNA signs contract with Landmark Architectural Design Studio

Executive Director Anne Hines signing a contract with Landmark Architectural Design Studio
Colorado Nepal Alliance has entered into a contract with Landmark ADS to rebuild a number of classrooms at a school in rural Darkha, Nepal. Last year, the school educated approximately 600 students in all, grades K-12. The school is notable for being the only school in Darkha that serves older students in the eleventh and twelfth grades. The earthquakes in April and May of 2015 destroyed nearly all of the buildings on campus. The lone exception was a newly-built reinforced concrete building, providing a paltry two offices and two classrooms to ...

The End: Musings on Joy, Suffering, Gratitude, and School-Building

My Capitol-to-Capitol expedition took me across some of the wilder and more beautiful parts of the Western US and Canada. 3081 pedaled miles, four US states, three Canadian Provinces, seven national parks, nine flat tires, five moose, nine black bears, four trumpeter swans, one tandem-recumbent sighting, three (wild) bald eagles, one porcupine, one badger, a salmon run, countless new friends, and 61 days after setting out from Denver, I flew home from Juneau, Alaska. Through the generous donations of friends, family, and strangers I met along the way, together we raised ...
